Spice Tour, Prison Island, Stone Town, 10. 7. 2016

sunny 27 °C

vanilku
lip spice
pepř
hřebíček
zázvor
lemon grass/ citrónová tráva
kardamom
kurkuma
Roste tu i ananas, pomeranče, kokosy a další dobroty.
U mastičkářky si nakoupíme krémy, sušené vonítko a kokosový olej. Pak je ochutnávka ovoce: banány, meloun, pomeranč, okurka, ananas a mango.

Breakfast is at 7:30 and 8:00 sharp we are picked up by our driver, who spends literally the whole day with us. From the car we observe the common life of common people in Zanzibar - quite exotic for us. After about 30 minutes we stop at a Spice farm. We see lots, for example:
Coffee
Cocoa
Cinnamon
Vanilla
Lip spice
Pepper
Cloves
Ginger
Lemon grass
Cardamom
Turmeric
Pineapple, oranges, coconuts and more goodies.
We get an explanation about every plant, what is used for what and how, sometimes the leaves, sometimes the fruit, bark or root or all of it...
While we walk around another tour guide platters all sorts of gifts for us from palm leaves - hats, headbands, ties, necklaces, rings, bracelets, hand bags... then they show us how the palm tree is climbed and they throw in a song with it too. We try the coconut, or more precisely - we drink the milk and then eat the fresh coconut.
We purchase some local produce - cream, dried scent, coconut oil and we proceed to fruit tasting: bananas, melon, oranges, cucumber, pineapple and mango.

Pak frčíme zpět do města.

From the spice tour we head to Stone Town, we head to a small port, where we get on a boat that takes us to Prison Island. The driver is a young kid, could be younger than Víťa.... He feeds Kevin with sweets, the boat is simple, but it takes us to the island, where a prison use to be and now there is a colony of giant tortoises that were brought here from the Seychelles. We feed them and cuddle them, we see lots of starfish and crabs from the lookout. Then we return to town. The driver asks us if we want to eat in a tourist place or a local restaurant. We go for the local experience. It's kind of a diner, there is only one dish, you can choose between a chicken or beef byriani with rice. I mean it is edible, but I am not very comfortable with the surroundings, no toilets, there is a mess all over, strange smell too, but the restaurant is packed with locals. The food comes to like 60 Kč (which equals about 2,50 Euro), the same costs about 200 Kč in the hotel (7,50 Euro). I have some sort of juice there too, am not sure what it was any more, maybe sugar cane juice...
After this we visit the Slave market - we have a young guide take us through the sight, he is a bit hard to understand and we are quite tired too (the monument to the slaves, church, catacombs, where 70 women and 50 men were held, pretty crazy). There is also a small museum with photographs and notes about the development of slave trading in this area which we go through.

Mají tam asi všechno možné, možná i nemožné. My chceme hlavně koupit manga, abychom se jich nabažili, manga není nikdy dost.

large_IMG_2262.jpglarge_IMG_2250.jpglarge_IMG_2241.jpglarge_IMG_2240.jpglarge_IMG_2239.jpglarge_IMG_2235.jpglarge_IMG_2233.jpglarge_IMG_2232.jpglarge_IMG_2231.jpg

Around the corner from the Slave market is also the local market. They have all sorts of things there. We intend to buy mango, to indulge on the local produce, there is never enough mango. We find a stand, or more like table with mango right away, but I wanna wait, we should get it on our way back, after we've looked around. We walk about 30 metres and Zanzibarees start circling us and attracting us into their shops or to have a look at their display in the street. I am holding the camera around my neck and I don't really feel that comfortable. We decide to turn around and head back to the car. We buy 6 mangoes, one mango is about 10 CZK, the salesman is so happy he gives Kev an orange for free. We walk into somewhat of a Raj's shop (Indian guy from a book Kev is reading) and we buy another exotic looking fruit - durian, our Ostrava friends buy some water and we get some chocolates too. It appear that there is some terrible smell here from something like sewage or the like, what we don't know is that we are carrying that smell in our own bag into the car.

Right after we get into the car the driver asks us if we bought durian, it takes us a while to realize that the horrid smell is from the durian. Right after we get to the resort he shows us how to open the durian. You step on it with your foot (with a shoe of course!), so we do as he tells us and try it a bit, it is sweet and slimy and very very smelly to say the least. We take it to the reception and ask them to dump it for us :) I even have to brush my teeth to get rid of the stink in my mouth...

I get an email confirmation about our reservation for Safari Blue for the next day, they will pick us up at 8:00. I let them know in the reception that we need our breakfast ready for 7:30. In the evening we only have a light dinner, toast, spaghetti and salad after this long sightseeing day. We head to bed quite early.
